Last season, the Champions League introduced a revamped format. Instead of four-team groups competing against each other home and away, 36 teams were all put together in one league table.
Following the league phase, the top eight sides in the standings automatically qualified for the round of 16. The bottom 12 were eliminated, leaving the teams who finished from ninth to 24th.
They competed in the two-legged play-off round to reach the latter stages.
The successful play-off teams faced top-eight opponents in the round of 16, who faced off to make this quarter-final stage.
Then there were two-legged quarter-finals, with the same home and away double header set to follow here in the semi-finals, before a one-off final showpiece.
