Rajasthan Royals captain Riyan Parag has been fined 25 per cent of his match fee after using a vape in the dressing room mid-game.
The Indian Premier League side was facing Punjab Kings when the 24-year-old was seen using the e-cigarette during the second innings of their win against the league leaders on Tuesday.
Organisers confirmed on Thursday in a release on their website that the action demonstrated “conduct that brings the game into disrepute” and breached Article 2.21 of the IPL’s code of conduct. Parag, who admitted to the offence, was given one demerit point alongside the fine.
The manufacture, trade, and advertisement of e-cigarettes has been illegal in India since 2019, due to health concerns.
The Royals won the match by six wickets, with four balls left, to keep them in fourth on level points with Royal Challengers Bengalaru and Sunrisers Hyderabad, one point off the top spot.
The IPL release also confirmed that the Board of Control for Cricket in India is exploring options to initiate proceedings for “stringent action” against the Royals, to ensure that the league’s reputation remains intact.
