Michael Carrick becoming Manchester United’s permanent head coach could help execute the midfield rebuild at Old Trafford.

There are two things that fans can be certain about with Manchester United’s summer plans. Firstly, a permanent head coach appointment will be made. Secondly, the transfer priority is to overhaul the midfield.

Michael Carrick is the favourite for the job following his impressive interim spell. United players support Carrick’s appointment, and the manager market means there is very little competition left for the role.

United plan to sign two top-class midfielders, and Michael Carrick’s reputation in the footballing sphere could help Ineos land their top targets.

Michael Carrick is a role model to many midfielders

Carrick was an incredibly underrated midfielder, but his career speaks for itself with five Premier League titles and one Champions League trophy.

Speaking to Manchester Evening News, United star Mason Mount spoke about looking up to Carrick as a role model in midfield.

“As a midfielder, I looked up to him when he played,” Mount said about Carrick.

“He was an absolute maestro in midfield. Since I was very, very young, I want to learn as much as possible like a sponge.”

Mount is not alone in his admiration of Carrick as a midfielder, and that reputation could help United lure some of their top targets to Old Trafford.

Michael Carrick reputation could help Man Utd sign Elliot Anderson

Just like Mount, United target Elliot Anderson would have grown up watching midfielders like Carrick in action.

Carrick hails from Newcastle just like Anderson, so they are already connected geographically as well as through their position on a pitch.

If United are going to beat Manchester City to Anderson’s signature this summer, the best chance of doing that is with Carrick selling the project to him.

Carrick has done excellent individual work in training, and he would be able to help Anderson’s progression as a midfielder better than most coaches.
