Austin Riley had the big swing in Atlanta, Cam Schlittler looked every bit like a Cy Young favorite in New York, the young White Sox kept their stunning season on track in Houston, and Michael King had a no-hit bid in San Diego.

Monday’s Wild Card Series kickoff did not disappoint. Some of the stars shined bright and all of the favorites won. The only home team that lost Game 1 was the Astros, who have the worst record of any team in the playoffs.

The Athletic’s Wild Card live coverage is back for another full slate of four games. The real action gets started with Braves vs. Phillies at 2 p.m. ET, and we’ll be here through the end of the 10 p.m. ET game between the Padres and Cubs.
October still hasn’t officially started, but there’s no doubt October baseball has arrived.
