If 144 seasons of Phillies baseball have taught us anything, it’s that Phillies fans should not expect good things. And yet, when this team gets a taste of contention for a five-year period, they deliver.
They made 6 playoff trips from 1976-1983, and came away with a title in 1980.
They made 5 playoff trips in a row from 2007-2011, and took the title in 2008.
This is the fifth playoff season in a row for the Fightin’s, and the best they’ve done was a World Series loss in 2022, the first year of that run. And every year since, they’ve slipped a bit farther from where they want to be. Sigh.
At least Phillies fans can enjoy the upcoming Phanatic documentary, “Big Phan,” premiering on Oct. 17 at the Philadelphia Film Festival. (Full disclosure: my brother is the director.) Everybody agrees that as far as mascots go, the big green guy is undefeated — even if his team can’t get him a third ring.
