Lane Kiffin and Dabo Swinney are both extremely successful college football head coaches, just as likely to make headlines for what they say off the field as for what their teams do on it.
That’s where the similarities end.
Swinney is the second-longest-tenured active head coach in the entire FBS, behind only Kirk Ferentz of Iowa. When Swinney took over Clemson in 2008 (initially on an interim basis), Kiffin had just been fired as the head coach of the NFL’s Oakland Raiders. Since then, Kiffin has been head coach at Tennessee, USC, Florida Atlantic and Ole Miss, with a two-year tenure as Nick Saban’s offensive coordinator at Alabama sandwiched in the middle.
One of the biggest points of criticism against Swinney during the past few years has been his reluctance to embrace the transfer portal when building his roster, preferring his previously successful model of relying on high school recruiting. Kiffin, on the other hand, turned Ole Miss into a College Football Playoff contender by styling himself as the “Portal King” and signed The Athletic’s top-ranked transfer portal class this past cycle.
Swinney has drawn notoriety for making his Christian faith a major part of Clemson’s culture and public image as a program, and he is not active on social media, preferring to issue his fiery comments in interviews, press conferences and occasionally radio shows. Kiffin’s private life has come under scrutiny at times, in no small part because Kiffin shares plenty of it by being an active user of Twitter/X on both his personal account and a separate account under the name of his dog, Juice.
And, as Swinney would no doubt like to point out, he has won two national titles as a head coach while Kiffin has not even coached a College Football Playoff game, infamously campaigning to do so for Ole Miss while leaving for LSU last year. Kiffin did win a national championship as Alabama’s offensive coordinator — coming at the expense of Swinney’s Clemson in the title game after the 2015 season.
