Jim Furyk will captain the U.S. Ryder Cup team in 2027 as the Americans attempt to win their first cup on foreign soil in 34 years.
The 2027 Ryder Cup will be hosted from Sept. 13-19 at Adare Manor in County Limerick, Ireland, with Luke Donald returning for his third consecutive captaincy on the European side.
It is Furyk’s second stint as captain, after presiding over the 2018 loss in Paris.
“The opportunity to captain the U.S. Ryder Cup Team for a second time is a tremendous honor,” said Furyk. “I am deeply grateful to the PGA of America Ryder Cup Committee for entrusting me to lead our team into the 46th Ryder Cup. My passion for the Ryder Cup and dedication to the U.S. Team have never been stronger. Having previously captained the team, I understand the responsibilities and immense pride that come with this role. I look forward to drawing on that experience while incorporating some new ideas as we prepare for 2027. I am committed to putting our players in the best position to succeed as we work to reclaim the Cup on European soil.”
Furyk’s appointment to the Ryder Cup captaincy comes in the wake of Tiger Woods’ retreat from the public eye as he seeks treatment out of the country. Woods was the favorite to captain next year’s cup, with the PGA of America clarifying it was his choice before it moved down its list. After he was arrested and charged with driving under the influence last month after a rollover crash near his home in Jupiter Island, Fla., Woods notified the PGA of America that he was removing his name from consideration.
Furyk, 55, has an extensive history with the U.S. Ryder Cup organization. He played in nine consecutive cups, a streak that ranks second all-time for the U.S. team, behind Phil Mickelson. Furyk already has experience serving as an away captain. He led the team at Le Golf National in France, where the Europeans defeated the Americans by a significant margin, 17½ to 10½.
In the moment, Furyk’s captaincy was questioned. Patrick Reed made headlines by publicly lambasting the decision to move him from his pairing with Jordan Spieth and sitting for two sessions. But in retrospect, the Spieth-Justin Thomas pairing was the Americans’ best, and an exhausted Woods (fresh off the Tour Championship win) and a struggling Mickelson may have been bigger factors.
The Europeans also grew up the rough at the course to create a decided home-course advantage, and many of Furyk’s automatic selections struggled to find the fairway.
Furyk has been a consistent figurehead on the Ryder Cup assistant captain’s rotation as well, serving as vice captain to Davis Love III’s and Steve Stricker’s winning campaigns in 2016 and 2021. He also served as vice captain for Zach Johnson’s loss in 2023 and Keegan Bradley’s home loss in 2025 at Bethpage Black.
The 17-time PGA Tour winner captained the Presidents Cup team in 2024 in Montreal, where the Americans beat the International team 18½ to 11½.
In the modern era of the Ryder Cup, only three other Americans have captained the team for a second time: Love, Tom Watson and Jack Nicklaus. Furyk becomes the fourth.
