Jon Rahm had just finished his post-round press conference on Saturday and was starting to walk away from a pack of reporters. But then the Spaniard stopped, turned and looked at a leaderboard inside Aronimink’s player interview room. Suddenly, Rahm had a question for the assembled press.
💬 “When is the last time you guys have seen a leaderboard like this? Forty guys within four shots of the leaders? That’s crazy.”
That number since changed, but the sentiment remains true of this clustered day at the PGA. Rahm wasn’t alone in his surprise.
“I’ve never seen anything like this,” Scottie Scheffler said.
Or to put it another way, with a stat via The Athletic’s Justin Ray: The tournament record for players within four shots entering a final round was 18. Right now, there are 22, and there would’ve been 30 if leader Smalley hadn’t made birdie at No. 18 to gain some distance.
