Rockies prospect Ethan Holliday set for foot surgery, will miss rest of season: Source

Colorado Rockies top prospect Ethan Holliday is set to undergo left foot surgery and will miss the rest of the season, according to a league source who confirmed a report from MLB.com’s Thomas Harding. Holliday, the No. 4 pick in the 2025 MLB Draft, had been placed on the injured list for Low-A Fresno with a stress fracture last week.

Widely considered the top prospect in last year’s draft class, Holliday signed with the Rockies for a $9 million bonus, the largest ever given out to a player drafted out of high school. He had a rough pro debut stint with Fresno, striking out 33 times in 84 plate appearances last season, but he rebounded for the Grizzlies after a slow start this season, hitting .262/.395/.557 with nine homers in 152 plate appearances. His strikeout rate was still high (28.3 percent) but much improved over his pro debut. The Athletic’s Keith Law ranked Holliday as the No. 38 prospect in baseball earlier this week.

A native of Stillwater, Okla., Holliday is the son of seven-time All-Star Matt Holliday and the younger brother of Baltimore Orioles infielder Jackson Holliday, who was the No. 1 pick in the 2022 draft. Ethan, 19, was considered a less polished hitter than his brother at the time of the draft but was also believed to have more power potential. A shortstop now, the younger Holliday could be in for a position change as he nears the big leagues. Law projects the 6-foot-2, 210-pounder to eventually move to third base.
