The biggest puzzle piece remaining for the Bills with about an hour to go is 2024 third-round pick DeWayne Carter. Drafted to fit the Bills’ previous 4-3 defense, Carter has attempted to get heavier and switch to a new 3-4 defense while in his first action since tearing an Achilles last year.
It hasn’t gone according to plan, as Carter didn’t secure the backup nose tackle role, which led to the Bills signing veteran nose tackle Greg Gaines a week-and-a-half ago. Carter played deep into the Bills’ third preseason game mostly alongside players who were cut by the team, which wasn’t promising for his chances.
The Bills may have been trying to facilitate a trade for their former Day 2 pick, but if they can’t find a suitor, you have to wonder if they would just keep him and go thin at other positions. With Carter and Gaines, the Bills would be looking at seven defensive linemen on the 53-man roster, which is a lot for a group that doesn’t offer much core-four special teams help.
